Author George Orwell (Eric Arthur Blair) died this day in 1950. Orwell is best known for Animal Farm and 1984.

These two books not only defined George Orwell, they defined a particular view of society in general, creating the descriptive word, “Orwellian.”

Animal Farm is a fabulous story how personal responsibility plays into society as a whole and asks the question if man can live without rules. Can society function if there are no guidelines? When are personal freedoms a detriment to society as a whole? Will citizens assist each other and work together out of choice? Are the workers as important in society as the leaders?

Animal Farm asks very important questions about leadership. Will a ruler always rise to the situation? Will the leader always serve the people or themselves? Can society survive without a leader? What is ultimate power and does it corrupt ultimately? When leaders become corrupt, selfish or insane, who will protect society itself? What skills make a good leader? Is division…
