The Profile Pic

What does a serious writer look like?

Aslynn Roe on the beach.

I decided to choose a picture showing a bit of personality. A little light levity for my profile because sometimes I am way too serious. This picture was taken at the beach in Florida. Any beach is my happy place.

I don’t want to be and I don’t think of myself as a serious person. However after the past 5 years, I am consumed by the news, democracy itself, climate change issues, and the future of our society and planet. They are serious topics and sometimes I have to force myself to take a step back from it all.

I write mostly nonfiction, grounded in research and facts and sometimes I realize I hate how serious I am in my writing.

So I chose a nice, light picture for my profile. To remind me to write from the heart, to keep it real and reveal myself in what I write.

And just write for fun. Because I like to play with my words.

My adult daughter saw one of my articles and immediately said the profile picture had to change. She said it was ridiculous.

Should I choose a picture with me and a pipe, a tweed jacket with elbow covers on it? Maybe a Sherlock hat on too? With a cup of coffee by my side as all writers drink coffee when they write? Do I need to have a book in my hands? Do I need to be in front of a stack of books?

What does a writer look like anyway?

I am asking my followers, what do you think? Who wins in the look of serious writing?
