Donna Summer Survived, but Disco…not so much

43 years ago there was division in this country. Jimmy Carter’s politics aside, music was splitting the country in half.

In 1980, Barry Manilow, Kenny Rogers, the Bee Gees and Donna Summer all received American Music Awards. Disco was still pounding the walls of huge dance floors as mirrored balls hung from the ceilings.

And then there was Pink Floyd, with their album The Wall hitting number one. Jethro Tull was bringing their unique Songs From The Wood. Both of these groups had huge followings and neither of them could be categorized into mainstream rock and roll. They certainly weren’t disco.

I distinctly remember going to see the movie Sgt. Peppers Lonely Hearts Club Band starring The Bee Gees and Peter Frampton. It was one of the highlights of my teens. My two besties and I saw it at the drive-in. We laughed, we sang, danced outside of the car, and just had a blast.

Who knew this movie would do a massive belly flop at the box office because disco, and everything Bee Gees, was deemed no longer cool?
