THIS DAY IN HISTORY
Remember Snowmageddon?
Are we in for more record breaking snowfalls?
In the past, January 22 has been a record breaking day in history.
In 2022, there was a record breaking snowfall across the US. Winter storm Kenan, a bomb cyclone, hit and dropped temperatures dramatically over a 24 hour period. Transportation services, flights and highways were closed. Blizzard conditions set in from Delaware to the eastern coast of Maine.
“Snowzilla,” A winter storm in 2016 brought 6 tornadoes, hail in Louisiana, ice, and 42 inches of snow in West Virginia. Many areas in the Northeast and Mid Atlantic had up to 3 foot of snow.
Eleven states declared a state of emergency, flights were cancelled and the National Guard were on duty. A travel ban was issued in New York City and New Jersey, and about 103 million people were affected by the storm.
In February of 2010, we survived “Snowmageddon.” Here in Maryland, we had 17 inches of snow. Three days later, just when we were digging out of it, another storm came and dumped on us again. Within 5 days we had 3 feet of snow, with horrible wind gusts making all roads completely impassable. There was so much snow, roofs collapsed. There literally was no place to put the snow when the plows went by.
