Oppenheimer Blowing up the World-Review
The World will remember this day
On this day, August 6, in 1945, an atomic bomb was dropped on the Japanese city Hiroshima and the future of the world is forever changed. The bomb, named “fat boy” was dropped from the Enola Gay, a B-29 bomber.
For those of you not familiar with this story, this was a desperate move by the United States to end WW2 and bring the war in the Pacific to an end. Three days later, the Japanese city of Nagasaki was also obliterated. On August 15, 1945, Japan surrendered.
According to the History Channel:
“Because of the extent of the devastation and chaos — including the fact that much of the two cities’ infrastructure was wiped out — exact death tolls from the bombing of Hiroshima and Nagasaki remain unknown. However, it’s estimated roughly 70,000 to 135,000 people died in Hiroshima and 60,000 to 80,000 people died in Nagasaki, both from acute exposure to the blasts and from long-term side effects of radiation.”
