Florida secedes from the Union-Jan. 10, 1861

In 1845 Florida became a state, only to secede from the union on January 10, 1861. Florida was the third state to secede, and a month later it joined other states to form the Confederate States of America.

The right to own slaves was tantamount to the decision by sixty two delegates in Florida, as white slave owners had three billion dollars invested in slave ownership. Nearly half the population, fourty-four percent, at that time was African American slaves. Ending slavery not only took away Floridians way of life, but also devalued everything they owned.

The following day, Florida signed a formal Ordinance of Secession. Sixteen thousand Floridians fought in the U.S. Civil War, five thousand of them died.

Florida was readmitted to the United States in 1868.

Why is this important today?

Just this past week, we have a former President saying he finds the Civil War attractive, and it could have been avoided through negotiation.
