I had never seen Cyrano de Bergerac in its many renditions, so I was completely fresh to the story when I saw Cyrano. I was pleasantly surprised and by the quality of this film and feel it was left out of the Best Picture and Best Director category.

The film earned Best Motion Picture — Musical or Comedy and Best Actor in a Motion Picture — Musical or Comedy (Dinklage) at the 79th Golden Globe Awards, but only received one nomination for Best Costumes at the Academy Awards.

The story is about Cyrano, played by Peter Dinklage, who is “madly in love” with Roxanne, played by Haley Bennett. His heart is true and pure as he only wants the best for her. Cyrano has decided the best man for her is Christian de Neuvillette played by Kelvin Harrison Jr. And although it rips him apart, he is on a mission to make his true love happy.

It’s a period movie, musical with a few strange twists and it has every reason to not succeed. But it is through an incredible screenplay by Erica Schmidt, directing by Joe Wright, acting by Dinklage and crew, this film brings a musical home to the heart.
