Dinklage’s best role

I had never seen Cyrano de Bergerac in its many renditions, so I was completely fresh to the story when I saw Cyrano. I was pleasantly surprised and by the quality of this film and feel it was left out of the Best Picture and Best Director category.

The film earned Best Motion Picture — Musical or Comedy and Best Actor in a Motion Picture — Musical or Comedy (Dinklage) at the 79th Golden Globe Awards, but only received one nomination for Best Costumes at the Academy Awards.

The story is about Cyrano, played by Peter Dinklage, who is “madly in love” with Roxanne, played by Haley Bennett. His heart is true and pure as he only wants the best for her. Cyrano has decided the best man for her is Christian de Neuvillette played by Kelvin Harrison Jr. And although it rips him apart, he is on a mission to make his true love happy.

It’s a period movie, musical with a few strange twists and it has every reason to not succeed. But it is through an incredible screenplay by Erica Schmidt, directing by Joe Wright, acting by Dinklage and crew, this film brings a musical home to the heart.

I am impressed with Wright’s technical abilities in the fight scenes in this film. Dinklage shows incredible skill as a swordsman and actor in the incredibly long fight scene shots. Not only is he adept at having a long realistic fight scene, but does it while reciting poetry (at a completely different cadence). This is extremely hard to do and I feel Dinklage deserves a Best Actor nod on this film.

Dinklage rose to fame for his role in Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri and also Game of Thrones. He plays intelligent characters, but this film shows his tenderness, humor and also wonderful comic timing. He is also a gifted singer, which he has downplayed in interviews about Cyrano. I do feel he was robbed of his name on the Best Actor ballot.

All of the vocals on this film are excellent, including Kelvin Harrison. But Haley Bennett is astounding for her vocal range.

The Oscars are tonight, but do yourself a favor and spend time with Cyrano. You will be glad you did.
