THIS DAY IN HISTORY
Building Bridges by Building Houses
Servant of the People-Jimmy Carter
On October 1, we will honor the birthday of the longest-living President, and more importantly, a great man. When Jimmy Carter was president, I remember hearing for the first time a president was supposed to serve the people of America. Jimmy Carter was hopeful for our country and our planet. I was happy to vote for him for my first time voting in a presidential election.
Before Carter, politics had been a bunch of rich old white guys who would stab each other in the back every minute of the day. βServe the people!β What a novel idea!
He truly lived this belief. He was an unlikely candidate running for an unlikely seat in the American government. To the public eye, Carter was charming, sincere, and brutally honest. He was the best candidate ever, and the worst at the business of politics. Carter believed in doing the right thing, even after he was elected. He could have easily fell into the untouchable, self-serving narcissistic behavior of some presidents.
